Learning Goals and Assessments

Learning Goal(s):

  1. Goal 1: To understand the history of Latina/os in U.S. media within larger political-economic and social contexts.
  2. Goal 2: To analyze Latina/o images in U.S. television and in films, paying particular attention to representations of class, gender, color and race and to those attempts that have tried to alter or challenge superficial depictions.
  3. Goal 3: To develop analytical and critical skills for assessing and analyzing the role of the media in modern society.

Goal Assessment(s):

  1. Assessment 1: Exam questions and in-class/homework assignments require students to demonstrate a grasp of relevant scholarly literature.
  2. Assessment 2: A critical viewing assignment asks students to track a television program over a period of time, or a series of films, for their final paper project.
  3. Assessment 3: The exams and the critical viewing assignments, as well as the in-class presentations foster in-depth thinking and facilitate in students their ability to critique media texts.
