Abstract

In this semester long project students read, discuss, and analyze Americanah from a sociological perspective. Through a close reading, in class discussions, a group presentation, and an individual final paper, students develop their sociological imaginations and deepen their understanding of core sociological concepts.

I have only used this assignment as part of a Principles of Sociology class. I usually have 30 students. I think the book works well for an introductory class because students are able to apply a broad range of different class concepts and theories. Though, I think it could work equally as well for upper-level classes on topics of immigration, race,...

Learning Goal(s):

1. 1. Cultivate and apply your sociological imagination to the experiences of the characters in Americanah.
2. 2. Understand what makes a good sociological discussion question and develop your own.

Goal Assessment(s):

1. Assessment 1: This happens throughout the semester through in-class discussions (both inside and outside of book club). Additionally, the last two paragraphs of their individual papers asks them to address this specifically.
2. Assessment 2 : I go over the handout "what makes a good book club discussion question." I then give individual feedback on their submitted questions each book club class.
