This class is intended to provide students with a new way of thinking about the relationship between sex, gender, sexuality, and sport. Our primary focus will be upon delineating and analyzing the role of sexuality in sports contexts. However, because sexuality is inextricably tied to sex and gender, we will examine these concepts theoretically and empirically to explore the way in which sport reflects and reproduces social stratification patterns. Thus, our perspective will be that of the sociologist (i.e., critical more in analysis than in judgment) rather than that of the sports journalist or the sports buff. A wide variety of topics concerning sex, gender, and sexuality in accordance with the subject of sport will be discussed including, but not limited to, feminist and queer theory, intimate partner violence, gender inequality, homophobia, intersectionality, social stratification, the body, stereotyping, and academic achievement.
