The purpose of this class is to present an overview of sociological theories and explanations of religion and spirituality. Sociologists typically focus on how human societies are affected by and affect spirituality and religion. Plans for class activities include a field trip to the Branch Davidian compound, observations of worship services, lectures, videos, and discussions. This is a sociology course investigating how sociologists have tried to explain and understand the religious experience, behaviors and institutions. Topics to be covered include the major theories of sociology of religion, President Bush’s Faith-based initiative, the Branch Davidian conflict near Waco, the Promise Keepers.
